Go…get yourself some Müller yogurt (An Influenster Review)

I was super-excited to try this Influenster Go VoxBox freebie this morning! Müller corner yogurt!

Screen Shot 2014-05-29 at 6.00.10 PM IMG_20140529_101000_751I hope you can tell my facial expression that I LOVED doing this review! This was a perfect mid-morning snack at work, especially when I had a small breakfast this morning. It was a bit sweet, though, and I would probably choose it as a dessert next time, rather than a morning snack. Regardless, yum!

Taking the Next Step (An Influenster Review)

As a part of my newfound motivation to increase my overall physical health and well-being, I have recently fallen into the habit of using protein powder. Protein powder pancakes, protein powder shakes, protein powder you-name-it. One thing I’ve found is that I’m eating less and also feeling less sore to the point where I have difficulty moving any and every muscle volitionally. As part of my exercise routine, I’ve gotten into the routine of doing my cardio, lifting my weights, stretching it out, and then gulping my protein-packed post-workout snack (or most of the time, drink). For the last few weeks of March and all through April, I’ve been opting for the cheap, generic form from whichever grocery/convenience store I’m shopping at that day. I’ve been using CVS brand, which runs around $18.49 for a tub. With about a scoop or two each day, with some days where I forget/eat other forms of protein, it’s lasted me a long, long time. The flavor is decent (for a protein shake), and when added to pancakes and other baked foods, it’s just fine. I would recommend this powder if you’re looking for a product that does its job without breaking the bank. Luckily, I’m also a member of Influenster, and I recently qualified for their Go VoxBox. This box was designed for fitness fanatics who are all about health and wellness, and I couldn’t have been happier to have been selected. Included (thank goodness!!!) was a sample of The Vitamin Shoppe’s Next Step meal replacement, and a blender bottle from the same company. I could not have been happier.

While my protein shakes were cutting it for me, the lumps were not too palatable. Granted, I made do with my resources, but it was so nice to not drink a lumpy, chunky shake when I was fueling up post-workout. Smooth protein shakes? This is a gift from the Influenster gods! Naturally, I was over-eager to sample my Next Step powder.

First on the list: Swiss Chocolate. (I’ve always been a go-to Vanilla girl, but after a month of chunky Vanilla shakes, I was ready to mix it up 😉 ) The chocolate was good in terms of a protein powder. It wasn’t quite the rich, dark flavor I crave in my chocolate, but it was tasty, nonetheless. The directions suggest mixing your packet with 8 oz of water, but I think I would opt for milk next time to make the drink creamier. I chose to try this drink for breakfast, and I didn’t work out that morning. (I’ve been kicking butt with my daily routines, but it has been leaving me feeling whooped at my typical 5am wake-up call. I’m fine with my evening “body blasts.”) It didn’t leave me completely satiated, but I did feel satisfied. I paired my shake with a grapefruit, sans sweetener, and I definitely got the morning munchies. I’m not blaming this on the powder: I’ve been eating around 5-6 meals a day, saving one of those as a protein powder “meal”.

IMG_20140522_063714_265 When I say I’m eating 5-6 meals a day, please don’t think I’m having huge, elaborate meals 5 to 6 times each day. (Pretty counterproductive, no?) I’m counting some of my “meals” as a grapefruit, a handful of nuts, some yogurt, etc. Something small. Maybe it’s psychological, and calling it a “meal” makes me feel fuller and eat smaller meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but its working! I eat every 2-3 hours, which is helping with my recent appetite surge.

Next on the list, Fresh Berries. I mixed this one with water, too, because I was worried the milk might make the berry flavor taste a bit odd. I was super excited for this packet, because I wanted to stray away from the ever-present chocolate and vanilla protein flavors. I have to say this flavor was great, but the drawback for me was how clumpy it was. I shook the drink my usual 30 seconds or so, sampled, and upon drinking several clumps, shook again. I was pretty disappointed at how many clumps I was drinking. I would probably still order this flavor because it tasted so good compared to my tired vanilla, but I wish there was a way to beat out those clumps. IMG_20140524_110710_039

Last, but not least, French Vanilla. I mixed this flavor with milk, and I never looked back. The flavor was creamy and delicious. I loved it so much more than my CVS vanilla, and it was the only flavor of the 3 that actually satiated my hunger.

Sewing Saturday

She may be 1,000 miles away, but my mom still inspires me. Yesterday, she inspired me to take a sewing class, which was offered at JoAnn’s. Then, of course, we chatted about it for about 45 minutes afterwards on the phone. This class was pretty fun, and I’m saying that about 40% because I have wanted to learn to sew on a machine for a long time, and about 60% because I was the only enrolled student in this class, and I needed the 1:1 time. 😉

Where to go from here…

A month ago, I went from this:

…to this:

IMG_20140428_144714

It’s now time for my touch-up cut. I’ve been debating whether or not I want to keep it super-short, or opt for more of a bob, so I can bring back my curls I love so dearly.

Surprisingly, for curly-haired gals, pixie cuts are NOT fun. I hate it, actually. I have to wake up an extra hour early so I can shower, apply products, blow dry, blow dry with controlled attachments, straighten, apply more product, tousle, apply more product, and finally, style, all so my hair can look how I assume straight-haired pixie cut gals’ hair does. Let’s just say that when I get out of the shower, I look like:

So, to get to a more desirable look, a la:

Screen Shot 2014-05-24 at 8.17.09 PM

…it takes a LOT of working through.

I’ve tried just brushing it/tugging it while blow-drying, hoping this will pull some curl out, but I’m both happy and discouraged to report that my curls are resilient. Without 410 degree straightening, those curly Q’s refuse to uncurl.

I am using Bumble & Bumble products to maintain/protect my hair from all the drying heat, using this first as a moisturizer, this in between blow-drying and straightening to prevent my hair from looking “stringy,” this after tousling with the cream, and this when I go a day without a wash, as a “dry shampoo” before re-straightening.

Oh, and did I mention that I have to re-straighten when I go a day without a wash? Yea, I hate it. Where before I could have just thrown up the ol’ locks into a high pony or a bun, now I’m forced to re-straighten or I end up looking spiky like:

…HAWT. (photo cred: The Lost Boys)

That all being said, I do love the short hair. It’s spunky; I’m told it suits my face well, and it’s a lot cooler than the long hair down here in sweltering Florida. I am definitely not going pixie again, though.

My last post was 51 days ago, which probably gives you a completely accurate indication of the month I’ve had.

What an April/beginning of May it’s been. When my CF mentor and the teachers at my school told me that IEP season was hellish, I should have paid closer attention. Granted, I maintain that graduate school was the worst time of my life, and that I still prefer just about anything to it (save only being throw into a pit of carnivorous beasts and the Spanish Inquisition).

That being said, IEP season is, in fact, hellish. It’s just basically a month of every female in the school acting like they’re PMSing (even though, truthfully, I can count the females I work with that this is an actually possibility on 1 hand) and I’m sick of it. However!!! IEP season was officially over for me yesterday, and I only have 3 more addendum documents to write, and I’m ready to call it summer!

As for this Saturday, I’m still working on IEPs — just for September and October. In true form, I will never quit until I’m ahead, and if I’m not at my site again next year (the perk of being a contracted employee…), I don’t want all the progress to regress into nothingness.

Rant over! Back to my Saturday of relaxation and document editing. 😉
